This paper is an investigation of the development and understanding of romantic love (\"ren'ai\") as it is revealed in the Taiyō (The Sun) magazine between 1895 and 1905.  The paper is part of the multidisciplinary research project on the Taiyō magazine directed by Professor Suzuki Sadami of the Nichibunken.  The focus here is on culture, and more particularly on literature, as the phenomenal mode in which notions such as \"love\" come to manifest themselves in history.
