In this essay I try to show that Yoritomo was not simply a military strategist and political expressed during the conduct of the war against the Taira and in his choice of institutions and ceremonies to incorporate into the newly developing warrior capital of Kamakura.  These religious interests included not only devotion to theMinamoto patron Hachiman and the Tsurugaoka Shrine but also to Kannon and the Lotus sutra, and to the Bodhisattvas and deities associated with many other temples and shrines in Kamakura, Izu-Hakone, Ise, Kyoto, and Kumano.
