This essay examines the case of Shōnen’en (1888–1895), Japan’s first major juvenile magazine, exploring its use of science in shaping the identity of the modern imperial subject. With the turn to morals-driven education in the mid-Meiji period, the government sidelined science instruction in schools, considering it a Western import detrimental to developing loyalty to the emperor. However, at this time, Shōnen’en’s editor placed great emphasis on science, believing it to be not only compatible with, but also an important means of nurturing juvenile subjecthood. Drawing on an image of science that had taken shape during the eighteenth century, when scientific discovery came to be seen as an endeavor requiring both intellectual and physical prowess, Shōnen’en (Youth’s garden) offered Japanese adolescents an imaginary landscape in which they could envisage themselves as heroic and truth-seeking imperial officers. This examination of a magazine published before Japan’s modern international wars broadens our understanding of the role of science in mid-Meiji Japan by demonstrating how an influential publication used science to shape the identity of the modern imperial subject, and shows that these efforts predated the establishment of Japan’s formal empire.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_5_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15055/00007410","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_5_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"International Research Center for Japanese Studies","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_5_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA10759175","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_5_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"09150986","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"},{"subitem_source_identifier":"24343129","subitem_source_identifier_type":"EISSN"}]},"item_5_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"MEADE, Ruselle","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"21463","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2020-04-30"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"jare_034_113.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"585.4 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"jare_034_113.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://nichibun.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/7433/files/jare_034_113.pdf"},"version_id":"55dc9d6f-9921-4520-a65e-b588f435d5c8"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"少年雑誌","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"明治時代","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"山県悌三郎","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"『少年園』","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"通俗科学","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"科学の大衆化","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"男性性","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"日清戦争","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"帝国主義","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"juvenile magazines","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Meiji period","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Yamagata Teisaburō","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Shōnen’en","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"popular science","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"science popularization","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"masculinity","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Sino-Japanese War","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"imperialism","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Juvenile Science and the Japanese Nation : Shōnen’en and the Cultivation of Scientific Subjects","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Juvenile Science and the Japanese Nation : Shōnen’en and the Cultivation of Scientific Subjects","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"5","owner":"30","path":["1059"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2020-04-30"},"publish_date":"2020-04-30","publish_status":"0","recid":"7433","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Juvenile Science and the Japanese Nation : Shōnen’en and the Cultivation of Scientific Subjects"],"weko_creator_id":"30","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2024-04-09T08:10:22.768984+00:00"}
