t’u-chin)は、明治維新の前夜、中国から輸入された多くの書籍のうちで、当時の日本人に最も多く読まれ、かつ最大の影響を与えた。その本が一八五四年に輸入されてから僅か三年間のうちに、二十三種もの和刻本が『海国図志』というタイトルで翻刻された。この中には十六種の日本語訳（書下し文）版が含まれている。この事実は、『海国図志』が漢文の読めない庶民にも読まれたことを物語る。この本に対する日本人の熱狂的態度は、一八五六年アロー号事件において敗北を喫する以前の中国知識人の、この本に対する無関心な態度とは対照的であった。\n　当時の日本における『海国図志』の受容の仕方は三つのタイプに分けられる。第一のタイプは、「夷の長技を師として夷を制する」こと、すなわち西洋の科学技術を採用することによって日本の独立を全うしようとするものである。第二は、この本から戦法、戦略を学ぶことによって攘夷をしようとするものである。そして第三は、西欧諸国の政治、法律、経済、ならびに社会組織における諸々の卓越した点を学び、このことを通じて日本を開化しようとするものである。\n　これらのうち、第一と第三のタイプが重要である。この論文においては第一の点のみに限って考察した。第一のタイプの社会的特性は、アーノルド・トインビー(Arnold Toynbee)によって、「ヘロデ主義者」(Herodians)と称された。そして私は、当時の日本におけるヘロデ主義者の代表者として佐久間象山（一八一一―一八六四）を選びたいと思う。\n　魏源と佐久間象山とは、お互いに何の交渉関係もないけれども、西欧の科学技術を採用するということにおいて共通の基盤をもっていた。象山は魏源を海外における「同志」とみなしている。\n　両者の差異は次の如くである。魏源は諸外国から戦艦や大砲を買うことで満足している。象山はこれに満足せず、みずから西欧のスタイルで大砲をつくることを試みた。この試練に成功するために、彼はオランダ語を学び、それをマスターした。そしてオランダ語で書かれた砲術の本を読むことによって、砲の製造に成功した。\n　象山は魏源を尊敬していたけれども、｢海国図志｣における砲製造法の記述を採用しなかった。なぜならそれは魏源の実験・実試二基づかず、象山にすれば｢児戯｣に類するものだったからである。ここでわれわれはこれら二人の対比のうちに、技術を軽蔑した中国読書人の知的文化と、技能一般の重要性を認めていた日本の武士文化との相違を想定しても、誤りではないであろう。そして更に象山は、徳川時代の科学者たちの｢親試実験｣の伝統をその背後にもっていたのである。","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_5_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"18722","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}],"names":[{"name":"MINAMOTO,
